Today is the feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary; it will be remembered that at Saint-Eugène the 'external solemnity' was celebrated at the beginning of the week, on Sunday. A missa lecta will be celebrated tomorrow-- whether it is to be streamed or not I'm not sure. It is the commemorated feast of the Martyr and Pope Saint Mark, and in the older Kalendarium also those of the Martyrs Saints Sergius and Bacchus and of the Martyrs Saints Marcellus and Apuleius, which two were at some point united into one commemoration.

Am having to go out to the pharmacy this morning, tsk. By the time I take the silly pill tomorrow morning it will have been a week that I've been without it. While I certainly don't notice its absence, the idea of having been without is troublesome.

In the Martyrology revised after the late Council, the liturgical memory of Saint Apuleius is suppressed due to the judgment that his history is entirely legendary (while Saint Marcellus's certainly is not).

The good folks at Neumz commented on the Communio of the feast, Floréte, flores, quasi lílium, which is the same also in the Pauline Rite Mass of the feast. 

To celebrate this day, we at Neumz have chosen the communion chant Florete flores. The text is taken from Sirach, also known as the Book of Ecclesiasticus, 29:19. “Blossom, you flowers...” is a luminous invitation from the Book of Ecclesiasticus to develop our supernatural activity in order to produce the fruit that God expects from us: the flowers that germinate within us and that with the Rosary’s fertilizer create a luxuriant bouquet of ineffable perfume, the fragrance of love. All of them we offer to God, along with our canticles of praise, blessing Him for the graces that He pours upon us and that make us blossom even more, raising us up in light and love.

As for the melody, it is composed in mode I; it is an adaptation of the communion Confundantur superbi from the Commune de sanctis.

 



 Everything in this piece is an invitation to praise and to become worthy servants of the Eternal Father. In the beginning, florete flores, flowers bloom, the accent of florete shines majestically on the La, dominant of the mode, marked by two slight bows in the form of a clivis, Fa-Mi. The semitonal interval confers great tenderness to this beginning. In flores, the melodic movement germinates around the fundamental, the Re, with a reverent descent to the Do and a majestic ascent with a quilismatic movement to the Fa, to end up settling on the Re. This melodic turn will return very similarly in the final cadence of the piece. In the next incise, quasi lilium, like the lily, with a splendid leap of a fifth in the accent of lilium, Re-La, fundamental and dominant, we are invited to be pure and loyal as symbolized by the lily. This closeness to the Lord is brilliantly materialized in the semitonal touch provided by the B-flat in the cadence. A type of insistence appears around the dominant in date, to give, with the porrectus resupinus, Sol-La-Sol-La: we are invited to bear a pleasant fruit, the initial invitation is gradually accentuated; after that, the melody descends delicately in the accent of odorem, odor or fragrance, and it settles, gracefully on the Re, then on the Do with a beautiful inverted cadence. In the next incise, et frondete in gratiam, and rich in grace, the melodic movement ascends from the robust low range with strength. Note the beautiful articulation in the accent of frondete, to blossom, on the La with the same cadence as in lilium: the grace makes that lily radiant, majestic, may the light of our soul shine with great brilliance.

In the next phrase, the invitation becomes a burst of jubilation, collaudate canticum, praise with canticles. The melody remains in the high range, the accent of collaudate resonates strongly with the bivirga on the Do. Also, the melody reaches the fundamental at the octave on the post-tonic syllable, and then settles on the dominant so that this song of praise around the La continues to sprout. Note the quilismatic movement in the accent of the word canticum, to which is added again the B-flat that gives a touch of tenderness to this immense joy. In the following incise, et benedicite Dominum, and bless the Lord, the similarity with the melody at the beginning of the piece is considerable. From Dominum onwards, the invitation to praise that characterizes this piece is also filled with gratefulness, which is internalized in the descent to the low register of the mode. In the accent of Dominum, the quilismatic movement gives firmness to the word, and the semitonal relationship of Mi-Fa reappears around the quilisma. The closeness to the Lord and the tenderness that he awakens in the soul become latent, blooming musically. In the last incise, in operibus, the masterful salicus that makes the accent shine gives an air of joy and veneration to the works of the Lord. In suis, His, the final cadence is almost identical to that of the first incise, in flores. In effect, the piece concludes by textually and musically uniting the beginning and the end: the works of the Lord are the flowers that grow from our souls.
