Today is Easter Friday, the sixth day in the Paschal Octave. A lovely walk earlier (fairly dry, no rain, far enough into Dawn's daily reign that there was some daylight but sunlight only in the clouds not my eyes, a cooperative hip, and so forth); the turkeys were in evidence. Yesterday, they were not, and I had been apprehensive that they were migrated to another stand of fir trees or et cetera-- there are a number of turkey-friendly undeveloped parcels of land in this region of Eugene. I doubt that the groundskeepers at Oakway Golf Course consider their greens 'undeveloped parcels of land' but the flocks of turkeys are, I reckon, entitled to their instincts.

Tomorrow, Saint-Eugène streams Holy Mass at 0030, here, which is worse than 0200 from the point of view of my sleeping. Rising at that hour typically means I get no sound sleep at all Friday-Saturday night but we shall see.

Lectio 1
Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum
Matt 28:16-20
In illo témpore: Undecim discípuli abiérunt in Galilǽam in montem, ubi constitúerat illis Jesus. Et réliqua.

Homilía sancti Hierónymi Presbýteri
Lib. 4 Comment. in Matth., in fine
Post resurrectiónem Jesus in monte Galilǽæ conspícitur, ibíque adorátur; licet quidam dúbitent, et dubitátio eórum nostram áugeat fidem.

R. Surgens Jesus Dóminus noster, stans in médio discipulórum suórum, dixit:
* Pax vobis, allelúja: gavísi sunt discípuli viso Dómino, allelúja.
V. Una ergo sabbatórum, cum fores essent clausæ, ubi erant discípuli congregáti, venit Jesus, et stetit in medio eórum, et dixit eis.
R. Pax vobis, allelúja: gavísi sunt discípuli viso Dómino, allelúja.

Lectio 2

* Itaque epulémur in Dómino, allelúja.
R. Itaque epulémur in Dómino, allelúja.
V. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
R. Itaque epulémur in Dómino, allelúja.

Lectio 3

As the station of yesterday was called simply ad Apostolos, so that of today was known as ad Martyres, and was intended by the Roman Church as a special tribute of veneration to her heroic sons, who, as the Apostle says, had not spared their life ut meliorem invenirent resurrectionem. The martyrs indeed seem to have a particular right to the glory of the Resurrection on account of their perfect resemblance to Christ crucified; and many ancient liturgies
kept a special feast in their honour in the very midst of the Easter festival. Today’s station ad Martyres remains as a last record of this early liturgical tradition, for, later on, the collective feast of the martyrs was transferred, even in Rome, to the middle of the month of May, and still later to the first day of November.

The Introit is drawn from Psalm 77, and contains an allusion to the paschal feast of the neophytes, who, like the Israelites of old, have escaped from the slavery of Egypt across the Red Sea, which is a symbol of holy baptism. The enemy who was overwhelmed by the waves is Satan, or sin. "The Lord brought them out in hope, alleluia; and the sea overwhelmed their enemies, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Attend, O my people, to my law; incline your ears to the words of my mouth."

The New Covenant has been sealed by the Easter sacrifice, which, being renewed daily on our altars, causes the spiritual value of Easter to endure for ever. It is necessary, therefore, for our works to be in accordance with our faith. The Collect finely expresses the same thought: "Almighty and everlasting God, who in the covenant of man’s reconciliation didst order the mystery of Easter; give grace to our souls, that we may follow up by our deeds what we outwardly celebrate." This is precisely the end which the Church has in view throughout the sacred liturgy, namely, to train the faithful and to obtain for them by her powerful intercession the grace of showing by their actions that sublime sanctity which she expresses in her rites.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Petri Apóstoli.
1. Petri 3, 18-22. 29:06

℣. Benedíctus, qui venit in nómine Dómini: Deus Dóminus, et illúxit nobis.

Allelúja, allelúja. ℣. Ps. 95, 10. 34:13. Dícite in géntibus: quia Dóminus regnávit a ligno.

At the Barroux the Sequentia is begun at 35:55.

Dic nobis, María, quid vidísti in via?

Surréxit Christus, spes mea: præcédet vos in Galilǽam.
