Today at Paris is the feast of its patronne Saint Geneviève and...

It is the Octave of Saint John Apostle and Evangelist. I'm late here this morning but it always interesting to observe the skies in the days after the solstice because it often seems as if someone has turned on a light in the mornings, they begin to brighten so noticeably. But I expect that 'damp and grey' will serve for the day, and it is predicted to rain but, eh.

Since I've copied the proper from Saint-E.'s libellum (here; the page at Liturgia is here) it features the obnoxious spaces before certain marks of punctuation; there is a purpose to that (I must suppose so!) but I find it simply obnoxious. The Mass of Saint John is here. At Barroux, the monks sang the Requiem; whether for the late Roman Pontiff or because of a death in their own community or for some other reason (it is a feria, I believe, in the Ioannes XXIII liturgical scheme-- it is a 4th class feast which is a feria with a cherry on top), I don't know, since I have only had my attention captured when the chant is being sung and not during the orations.

Apart from other versions of the Introit (utilizing different verses), none of the parts of the proper show up at Gregobase or in the Liber usualis. Which is a good demonstration, were one needed, how much of the liturgical patrimony exists outside of the Roman books.

M le Curé is celebrating Holy Mass; it is what I would call a missa cantata, a messe chantée

Introitus. Isaias 61. Ps. 44,1. Gaudens gaudebo * in Dómino et exsultábit ánima mea in Deo meo: quia índuit me vestiméntis salútis, et induménto justítiæ circúmdedit me, quasi sponsam órnatam monílibus suis. Ps. Eructávit cor meum verbum bonum: * dico ego ópera mea Regi. V/. Glória Patri.

Oratio. Effúnde super nos, Dómine, Spíritum agnitiónis et dilectiónis quo ancíllam tuam Genovéfam implevísti: ut sédula ejus imitatióne tibi sincére obsequéntes; fide tibi et ópere placeámus. Per Dóminum.

Lectio Epistolae Beati Pauli Apostoli ad Corinthios
II Cor 10, 17-18 11,1-2

Graduale. Osea 2. Sponsábo te mihi in sempitérnum in justítia et judício, et in miseratiónibus. V/. Et sponsábo te mihi in fide, et scies quia ego Dóminus.

Allelúia, allelúia. V/. Mihi adhærére Deo bonum est, pónere in Dómino Deo spem meam. Alleluia.

Sequentia seu Prosa.

Genovefae solémnitas
Solémne parit gáudium.
Cordis erúmpat púritas
In laudis sacrifícium.

Felix ortus infántulæ,
Teste Gérmano Præsule.
Quod prævídit in spíritu,
Rerum probátur éxitu.

Hic ad pectus virgíneum,
Pro pudóris signáculo,
Nummum suspéndit æneum,
Insígnem crucis título.

Genovéfam divínitus
Obláto dotat múnere,
In templum Sancti Spíritus,
Sub Christi ditans fœdere.

Insontem manu fériens,
Mater privátur lúmine,
Matri Virgo compátiens
Lucis dat usum prístinæ.

Cælésti duce prævio
Cælos lustrat et Tártara,
Civésque precum stúdio
Servat a gente bárbara.

Divino diu múnere
Sitim levat artíficum ;
Confráctum casu mísero
Matri resígnat únicum.

Ad primam precem Vírginis
Contremíscunt dæmónia,
Pax datur energúmenis,
Spes ægris, reis vénia.

In ejus manu cérei
Reaccendúntur cælitus :
Per hanc in sinus álvei
Redit annis coércitus.

Ignem sacrum refrígerat,
Post mortem vivens méritis,
Quæ prius in se vícerat,
Æstus intérni fómitis.

Morti, morbos, dæmónibus
Et eleméntis ímperat,
Sed Genovéfa précibus
Natúræ leges súperat.

Operátur in párvulis
Christi virtus magnália :
Christo, pro tot miráculis,
Laus frequens, jugis glória.
Amen. Alleluia.

Sequentia Sancti Evangelii secundum Matthaeum
Matt 25,1-13
In illo témpore : Dixit Jesus discípulis suis parábolam hanc : Símile erit regnum cælórum decem virgínibus : quæ accipiéntes lámpades suas, exiérunt óbviam sponso, et sponsæ.
At ille respóndens, ait : Amen, dico vobis, néscio vos. Vigiláte itaque, quia nescítis diem, neque horam.

I had forgotten of course-- M Durodié is sermonizing, ahem-- but Saint Genevieve has a second feast, on November 26, commemorating her intercession to end the outbreak of le mal ardent in 1120; the gendarmerie de Paris takes this as their patronal feast, Sainte Geneviève des Ardents. One can see the outline of her chapel at the Place Jean-Paul II, the square which Notre-Dame faces.

Offertorium. O Genovéfa, réspice nos pietátis óculo ; consors lucis angélicæ, Regis assístens vúltui, nos in Deo reconcília.

Secreta. Offeréntibus tibi, Dómine, preces et múnera in honóre sanctæ Vírginis tuæ Genovéfæ : da nobis, ejus exémplo, perseveráre in innocéntia vitæ, in humilitáte poeniténtiæ, in mansuetúdine patiéntiæ. Per Dóminum.

Communio. Iudith 15. Tu glória Jerusalem, tu lætítia Israel, tu honorificéntia pópuli nostri, alleluia.

Postcommunio. Prosint nobis, Dómine, quæsumus, ad salútem mentis et córporis sacraménta quæ súmpsimus : ut sicut in beáta Genovéfa te mirábilem prædicámus ; sic per ejus suffrágia tuæ sumámus beneficéntiæ largitátem. Per Dóminum.

Have realised with a slight shock that I have jury duty on Friday; had forgotten all about it.
