Have to go out on an errand later on, unfortunately, and so decided to sleep through the Paris Mass at 0200; I will be back here with about half an hour to spare before Saint-Eugène's Vespers, tsk, not having watched the video recording of Mass: not a catastrophe, obviously, but I dislike the disorder it involves.

Am back earlier-- it is shortly after 0730-- than I had anticipated last night for the simple reason that I left the house earlier, just when the Office was done. This is because at some point during Saint Gregory's homily at Matins I realised that the supermarket actually opens at six. That I have it lodged in my mind that seven o'clock is when I get to the store is down to my aptitude for converting these circumstances of daily life (e.g. walks, shopping, shower times) into rules. This saves a certain amount of fussing but also can serve to blind me to possibilities. Eh. I had to buy solution for dry eyes with sodium carboxymethylcellulose (a word I've never pronounced) in it since I forgot to add it to the shopping cart Friday morning; while yesterday and this morning passed without any incident, I'm afraid to go more than two nights without the eye drops. While immiserating about my forgetfulness and the probable horrors of a scratched retina, it occurred to me to look online and to my chagrin I discovered that I can buy the stuff at Amazon for a couple of dollars less than what Safeway charges. I wouldn't do the buying online to save two bucks if it were a question of taking business away from e.g. Kiva, the locally-owned grocery downtown, but I have no qualms about depriving the Safeway-Albertsons-Fred Meyer-Kroger corporation of 'em.

Lectio 1
De Isaía Prophéta
Isa 11:1-4
Et requiéscet super eum Spíritus Dómini: spíritus sapiéntiæ et intelléctus, spíritus consílii et fortitúdinis, spíritus sciéntiæ et pietátis;

* Super omnes gentes.

R. Et áuferet a te omnem tribulatiónem.
V. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
R. Et áuferet a te omnem tribulatiónem.

Introitus. Is. 30, 30. Pópulus Sion, ecce, Dóminus véniet ad salvándas gentes: et audítam fáciet Dóminus glóriam vocis suæ in lætítia cordis vestri. Ps. 79, 2 Qui regis Israël, inténde: qui dedúcis, velut ovem, Joseph. ℣. Glória Patri.

Oratio.

Graduale. Ps. 49, 2-3 et 5.
Ex Sion species decóris ejus: Deus maniféste véniet, ℣. Congregáta illi sanctos ejus, qui ordinavérunt testaméntum ejus super sacrifícia.

Allelúja, allelúja, ℣. Ps. 121, 1
Lætátus sum in his, quæ dicta sunt mihi: in domum Dómini íbimus. Allelúja.

✠ Sequéntia sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum.
Matth, 11, 2–10

The Schola repeated the Sol sub nube latuit this morning, after the Gospel and after M. le Curé's homily (before the Credo); it is an anonymous conductus from the Magnus Liber Organi of the 12th century cathedral school of Notre-Dame, attributed sometimes to Gautier de Châtillon, and very lovely. ("This conductus has two contrafacts: the devotional song Pour mon chief reconforter [RS 885] by Gautier de Coinci and the chanson Chanter et renvoisier sueil [RS 1001] by Thibaut de Blaison."--  I'm not sure what it means, its having two contrafacts, ha; the note at the third video infra.)

And this version, too.

And this third version.

Offertorium. Ps. 84, 7–8. Deus, tu convérsus vivificábis nos, et plebs tua lætábitur in te: osténde nobis, Dómine, misericórdiam tuam, et salutáre tuum da nobis.

It must have been decided that convertens rather than conversus is the more correct reading; I don't know the rationale for the alteration while being sure that 'they' had one.

Secreta. Placáre, quǽsumus, Dómine, humilitátis nostræ précibus et hóstiis: et, ubi nulla suppétunt suffrágia meritórum, tuis nobis succúrre præsídiis. Per Dóminum.

Communio. Bar. 5, 5; 4, 36 Jerúsalem, surge et sta in excélso, ei vide jucunditátem, quæ véniet tibi a Deo tuo.

The prose for the Second Sunday in the Parisian Rite was sung at the Communion; was composed by Notkerus Balbulus (840-912) of Saint-Gall.

Regnántem sempitérna
Per sæcla susceptúra
Cóncio, devóte cóncrepa:
Fáctóri reddéndo débita:
Quem júbilant ágmina cœlica, éjus vúltu
exhilaráta:
Quem exspéctant ómnia térrea, éjus nútu
examinánda
Distríctum ad judícia:
Cleméntem in poténtia.
Amen

Postcommunio.
Repléti cibo spirituális alimóniæ, súpplices te, Dómine, deprecámur: ut, hujus participatióne mystérii, dóceas nos terréna despícere et amáre cœléstia. Per Dóminum.

Vespers has finished; I must attend to this and that before I turn on the video recording of Holy Mass. In a while the recording of Vespers will be available to place here.
