Sainte Nicholaes godes druð...

Noticed at Twitter earlier that Dr Eleanor Parker reminded us this morning of Saint Godric of Finchale (of whom I had never heard) and his song in celebration of Saint Nicholas; her post on Saint Godric, whose "are the first songs in English for which the music survives". (The Sainte Nicholaes is preceded by his two others, Crist and sainte marie and Sainte marie uirgine.)

Sainte Nicholaes godes druð
tymbre us faire scone hus
At þi burth at þi bare
Sainte nicholaes bring vs wel þare

Saint Nicholas, God’s beloved,
Build for us a fair bright house;
At the birth, at the bier,
Saint Nicholas, bring us safely there.
