Another lovely Dawn...

In the current long series of them; while I'll welcome the rains when they return next month (or in November) I love these cool, bright mornings (the chill remains once the raining begins but the morning sunshine disappears until May, with the occasional exception of course). It is a feria in the 1570 Missal but the feast of the Saint Stephen Confessor, King of Hungary, in later editions.

After my first errands of the day, was here with only a few minutes to spare before Holy Mass at Saint-E. began. It is the Mass Cogitationes cordis eius because it is the First Friday with commemoration of the feast of the holy Bishops and Martyrs Jean-Marie du Lau d'Allemans, François Joseph de la Rouchefoucald, and Pierre Louis de la Rochefoucauld, along with 93 other clerics and religious, killed by the men-become-beasts of the Revolution in 1792. There is in fact a second cohort of Martyrs at Paris also celebrated today (they were raised to the altar on separate occasions, I'm presuming), and I'm sure M. l'Abbé Grodziski recalled all 117 of them-- the only name I heard him mention was that of Blessed Jean-Marie du Lau d'Allemans; I don't know whether both sets of martyrs have the same proper orations or not.

The website of the Association du Souvenir des Martyrs de Septembre 1792 lists the names with some identification; I had wondered if the Rochefoucaulds were brothers but perhaps not (B. François was de la Rochefoucauld Maumont and B. Pierre was de la Rochefoucauld Bayers), cousins, maybe; the Almanach tells me nothing (or at least I was able to read nothing of the tiny print in re Maumont and Bayers). I did notice, however, that Miss Mattie Elizabeth née Mitchell of Portland, Oregon, became the wife of François Duc de la Rochefoucauld (m 1925); she was the daughter of US Senator John Mitchell of this fair State whose career was, to say the least, colorful, including bigamy, desertion, fraud, who knows what else; a consummate parvenu. The Senate had begun the process of expelling him when he died.
